River’s edge

Gourmet Traveller joins forces with luxury river-cruise specialists APT for a bespoke expert-led experience along the Danube from Budapest to Prague.

-

It’s no coincidence that any mention of the Danube is frequently preceded by the words “the beautiful blue”. Strauss’s famous waltz aside, not only is Europe’s second-largest river a sight to behold in itself, but it glides past some of the continent’s most picturesque landscapes, fairytale towns and classic architecture. What better way to experience it, then, than on a leisurely, expert-led, all-inclusive luxury river cruise? APT’s 13-day Highlights of the Danube tour includes seven nights on the river, bookended by stays in Budapest and Prague, two of the most romantic cities in Europe. In the cities divide your time between guided tours and your own explorations. In Prague chances are you’d choose to lunch with the Czech Republic’s oldest aristocratic family at the baroque Château Jemniste, then watch a falconry display. In Vienna private classical concerts and cocktail receptions in palaces are on the agenda. In Budapest, meanwhile, a tour of the Great Market Hall is a highlight. Lisa Featherby, Gourmet Traveller senior food editor, will join the tour to lead food-focused experiences including a cooking demonstration on what promises to be a memorable journey. Smooth sailing all the way.

I’m excited to be exploring this beautiful part of the world with APT and cooking with some of the great produce along the way. I hope you can join us.
