[Bar 19] The in­ner-voice move­ment on this A mi­nor chord is another ex­am­ple of how the great song­writ­ers get more mileage out of one chord. This type of sound also re­flects the jaz z in­flu­ence within Si­mon’s play­ing. [Bar 25] There are sev­eral dif­fer­ent pick­ing-hand ap­proaches you can take to sound the chords on beat two – you could pluck both with the thumb, first and sec­ond fin­gers; or con­versely you could lightly brush down then up the strings with the pick­ing hand first fin­ger­nail, Paul McCart­ney st yle. [Bar 27] And again, there are sev­eral meth­ods to pluck the D chords here – ei­ther use a tra­di­tional ‘pima’ ap­proach where the thumb takes care of the four th string, the first fin­ger plucks the third string and so on; or use the thumb to pick the fourth string, and the thumb, first and sec­ond fin­gers to pick the third, sec­ond and first strings.
