Example4 Wayne Shorter

Guitar Techniques - - Lesson: Jazz -

Over the F7, Wayne Shorter moves up F Mixolydian, implying Cm7 and F7 on beats 3 and 4, then moving into Bb Mixolydian over the Bb7 and anticipating the F7, coming down F Mixolydian and throwing in an implied C7b9 – F7 resolution. Over the Bb7, he comes down Bb Mixolydian with a chromatic passing note, throwing in an implied Fm7 and in the next bar, suggesting Bb Lydian b7 and C7b9 resolving back to F7. Over the D7#9, C7 and Bb7 chords he moves into a characteristic laid-back descending 4ths idea, and closes on a simple, sparse ascending rhythmic figure.
