Stevie Ray Vaughan’s No. 1, a vintage Strat made up of genuine parts of differing ages, helped popularise the beaten-up, heavy-relic look. Some of the tweaks Stevie made to his Stratocasters included fitting bass frets, using extremely heavy- gauge strings, fitting a Hendrix-inspired left-handed vibrato unit and downtuning to Eb; all of which supercharged his tone at source, and inspired an army of imitators.
