Tak­ing in­spi­ra­tion from rick James (and you’ll prob­a­bly hear how Prince and lenny Kravitz were in­flu­enced by him here too) this dis­torted riff moves through a 12 bar-style pro­gres­sion to demon­strate a few variations. Of­ten, a dis­tinc­tive fea­ture of these riffs is their rep­e­ti­tion with­out sig­nif­i­cant change, so take these ideas on board, but don’t feel you have to be play­ing this busily to play this style well.

For the bluesy 1/4 tone bends (eg bar 3) bend the sixth string slightly to­wards the floor

For bar 5’s ascending chro­mat­ics on the sixth string, use all four fin­gers
