Here’s the same se­quence, but be­gin­ning with a pair of ideas de­liv­ered from chord shapes. In bars 3 and 4 we turn this into a sin­gle-note string-cross­ing idea. Note the an­tic­i­pa­tion in bar 6, where Louis makes the move to­wards F7 early by choos­ing e ( 7 of F7) over e nat­u­ral (3rd of C7). This makes the lis­tener think the im­pro­viser is lead­ing the rhythm sec­tion into each new event rather than re­solv­ing late, which could sound like they were re­act­ing late or had missed the change.
