PLAYING TIPS
cd track 29
[Bars 1-16] Aim to play this piece nice and smoothly with as much sustain as possible. The top melody notes can be played with a gentle rest stroke; just push them out slightly from the accompaniment. Picking hand fingering is indicated with a suggestion for the first four bars. In bar 3 mute the low D from ringing through from the previous bar – I do this with the thumb immediately after playing the first beat. Watch out for the awkward fretting-hand stretch at bar 5 – try to relax your hand and lengthen the fingers. Barres will be needed in bars 9 to 12 and watch out for the position shift from bar 14 going into 15.
