I’d like to direct you to three great players and three of their finest solos. First, Alan Murphy: check out his solos on Don’t Look Down, SOS and Haunted from the first Go West album. Moving into 70s fusion, listen to Allan Holdsworth’s incredible legato, stretches and whammy bar technique on Beelzebub, Sample And Hold and If You Can’t Stand The Heat, from Bill Bruford’s Feels Good To Me. Finally, Zakk Wylde’s phrasing and vibrato on the Ozzy tracks No More Tears, Miracle Man and Crazy Babies should give you plenty to think about.
