New film honours Muddy Waters and Howlin’ Wolf sidemen

-

Guitarist Hubert Sumlin, pianist Pinetop Perkins and drummer Willie ‘Big Eyes’ Smith were never recognised as stars, but their roles as sidemen for Muddy Waters and Howlin’ Wolf helped make blues history. Now, a new film will finally honour them.

Sidemen: Long Road To Glory features not only some of their last interviews together, but performances on a world tour, too. The three men all sadly passed away in 2011, but they leave an incredible legacy. That’s further highlighted by personal insights and performances in the film by those they influenced, including Derek Trucks, Robby Krieger, Bonnie Raitt and Joe Bonamassa.

“I have dedicated the past eight years of my life to this project for three reasons: Pinetop Perkins, Willie ‘Big Eyes’ Smith and Hubert Sumlin,” director Scott D Rosenbaum tells Guitarist. “When I met those three men who played such integral parts in the legacy of the blues, I knew I wanted to document who they were. When we lost all three of them while still shooting the film, the desire to make the film took on a whole new complexion. The importance of documenting their stories became more significant, along with the pressure to create a proper testament to these musicians who had, by that time, become my friends. I’m pleased to say with confidence, after showing the film at festivals around the world, that we’ve achieved a fitting tribute.” It’s hoped that the film will be released later this year.
