594 – what the…? Gibson’s 50s scale length was 24.594 inches, not the usually quoted 24.75 inches. Even today, the actual scale length used by Gibson is shorter than its quoted length. Using this scale on the 594 makes it a trifle longer than PRS’s shortest 24.5 inches, used on the Santana model and many recent Singlecut models, so it might make some hardened vintage Gibson players feel more at home.

…and McCarty? There are three legendary Gibson geniuses: Orville himself back in the 1800s; Lloyd Loar, who developed the L-5 and others in the 1920s; and Gibson’s ‘golden era’ guru Theodore ‘Ted’ McCarty, who oversaw Les Paul, ES-300 series, Flying V and Explorer models. He was later mentor to Paul Reed Smith.

Why so costly? PRS’s build quality, attention to detail and level of research into what makes guitars great is almost without parallel. What you get here is years of obsessive experimentation with materials, tone and playability, and we’d say that makes for excellent value for money. Sorry!
