Tech Chris Lawson advises a common-sense approach to sculpting your sound on stage. “If you have a lot of bottom-end in your guitar tone the chances are front of house is going to cut it out, because that’s one thing they’re always trying to control. If there’s lots of washy bottom-end they’ll always be trying to get on top of it. The other thing they often try is holding your volume back if you’re too loud. If you’re louder than the PA, which is possible in a small venue, they may ask you to turn down (which to most guitarists is like insulting their mother!). You could just go for a small amp and turn it up a bit more. You’re going to get more fun out of that, especially as you’ll be able to hear what you’re playing much better.”
