The solo’s coming up, you want a bigger sound, you step on the extra gainy pedal… your sound disappears! We’ve all done it, but if you want to stop doing it just remember, the more gain you pile onto a sound, the more headroom and clarity you lose, the more everything is compressing and the less the audience can hear you. If this is happening to you, you’re better off with a clean boost or EQ pedal, preferably with a slight bass cut and an increase in upper midrange, treble and presence.
