Walter Trout’s guitar tech Andrew Elt says preparation in advance is key to getting rock-solid tuning stability, especially before a big gig. “I like to change strings at least a few hours before the show. Change one string at a time – this means the neck is kept under even tension. Take time to stretch in each fresh string by giving it a little tug or two outwards from the body, as if drawing a bow, then retuning to pitch. I like to use Big Bends Nut Sauce on the nut slots every now and then – makes bending easier and strings stay in tune better.”
