Perhaps the greatest beneficial influence on tone comes from the player. Trick gear won’t give you the soulfulness of BB King or the expressive powers of Jeff Beck. To sound really good, immerse yourself in the music you play and form each note as gracefully and musically as you can. Play a lot. Play every day and in front of other people until the purely mechanical aspects of playing occupy less of your attention. Listen to great musicians as often as you can – not just other guitarists but horn players, singers, drummers – they’ll all teach you about taste, phrasing and touch. That’s the real soul of great tone.
