Hear It Here
STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN TEXAS FLOOD
Though working with an excellent rhythm section, Stevie has the full harmonic responsibility on his shoulders on the title track – a classic slow blues. Love
Struck Baby shows him filling out the sound Chuck Berry style and Lenny takes us outside the classic 12 bar progression, but is packed so full of ideas that it’s hard to imagine a player that wouldn’t find a couple of licks worth stealing!
JIMI HENDRIX LIVE AT THE ROYAL ALBERT HALL
It’s never easy choosing which Hendrix album to recommend, as they’re all pretty essential, but it’s always worth checking and re-checking Jimi’s live performances for a bit of inspiration. Here, the versions of
Red House and Voodoo Chile (Slight Return) should give plenty of inspiration, but also check out The Wind Cries Mary – which isn’t on the album – as it outlines the chordal harmony so beautifully.
BB KING AND ERIC CLAPTON RIDING WITH THE KING
Though the more heavily arranged album here, this album of duets gives double value, as we get to hear both players adding their thing to a variety of classic material. Particularly relevant here are Three O’Clock Blues, Key To The Highway (maybe cross-referencing the Derek and the Dominoes version) and Worried Life Blues. You may as well check out BB’s Live At The Regal version of Sweet Little Angel, too.
