Fender Electric XII

-

Here, we’re looking at a 1965 Fender Electric XII in rare Firemist Gold, currently for sale by ATB Guitars of Cheltenham. The Electric XII was introduced to Fender’s catalogue in 1965. As ATB Guitars puts it in its listing: “There’s a good reason why this guitar was the go-to studio 12-string when it was introduced. The feel of the neck and the action are a joy, and the instrument has such vibrant tone when played acoustically. The tonal scope offered by the split-coil pickups is always surprising, making the job of coaxing out a variety of lush sounds a dream.”

While there are usually at least a handful of Electric XIIs available on the vintage market (there have been around 300 listings on Reverb over the years), a majority of circulating specimens are found with the standard-issue Sunburst finish, like on contemporary Strats and Jazzmasters. What makes this guitar so rare, collectable and jaw-dropping is that original Firemist Gold finish, one of the most coveted of all custom Fender finishes from this era. What’s more is that this isn’t even the only rare finish Electric XII on offer from ATB Guitars – the shop also hosts an example in a similarly rare Black finish.

Though not the only intriguing electric 12-string guitar design to come out of this era, and certainly not the only rare Fender model of the mid-60s, the Electric XII is like nothing else. To find one with a rare custom finish in such immaculate condition makes this a peak listing on Reverb.
