Freycinet Vineyard
2014 FREYCINET CABERNET MERLOT
RRP $40 / 2030
73% cabernet sauvignon, 19% merlot and 8% cabernet franc. 2 years in oak. That extra time spent out of the spotlight prior to release has helped create a mellow, almost easy-going red, though both keen acidity and tannin make sure that no one gets the wrong impression; this is a quality red and one that will take extra bottle age with ease. Mulberry and blackcurrant, pencilly oak, tobacco notes and a gentle run of green (not unripe) herbs. It’s in a good place now but it’s not going anywhere in a hurry. 13.5% alc
WINEMAKER Claudio Radenti What do you love about aged wine?
The drinking pleasure of cool-climate wines is greatly enhanced with, say, four to eight years of age on them – this is particularly true of cabernet, pinot noir, chardonnay and riesling. I love how the edginess, fruitiness and tension of youth matures and totally harmonises into seamless, complex wines that simply melt in your mouth.
