Single vineyard, 100% new French oak, 50 dozen made. The oak is clear and obvious, but the fruit is right up to the task. Smoked cedar wood and meaty spice notes ripple through pure, ripe plum, clove and blackberry. For all its richness it feels manicured and controlled. It exudes class. 14.5% alc. CM

Some vineyards produce wines with the right balance of fruit, tannin and acid year in, year out. They are destined to evolve slowly in bottle. The historic Schulz Vineyard in Ebenezer, where the fruit for this shiraz comes from, is this kind of site. It is balanced and will remain so over the journey. While it drinks well young, over time the earthiness takes centre stage, and the fruit and tannins soften, but the mouthfeel remains. It makes me proud to see it offer so much enjoyment throughout what is inevitably a long life for those who choose to cellar.
