What excites you most about the region right now?
We are seeing fantastic pinot noir from our Seaview Vineyard. The undulating hills and coastal winds produce low-yielding, thick-skinned berries ideal for producing highly aromatic and complex wines. We are also seeing promising results from experimental winemaking techniques, such as concrete egg-shaped fermentation vessels and oval barrels, resulting in some of the most exciting wines we have made to date.
What are you doing differently at Yealands Estate?
We were the first winery in the world to be certified carboNZeroCertTM, with sustainability at our core. Our site is home to 25 wetlands developed for biodiversity, natural pest control in the form of chickens, and the largest solar panel array in NZ on our roof. We even burn vine prunings to create energy in specially built burners.
