Best Value Winery of the Year
DEEP WOODS ESTATE | MARGARET RIVER | WESTERN AUSTRALIA
DEEP WOODS chief winemaker and general manager Julian Langworthy was born and raised in Margaret River. After an impressive career spanning across France, Canada, the Barossa Valley, the Clare Valley and Coonawarra, he returned home to make wine in Western Australia.
“Coming home to Deep Woods to make wine was exciting and awesome. We just have this amazing Goldilocks effect of lovely sunny days, cool nights, wonderfully diverse soil types and aspects. It really is a winemaking nirvana. It’s never too hot, never too cold, and it’s just a beautiful place to grow grapes.” The 2019 Halliday Winemaker of the Year says Deep Woods aims to produce Margaret River’s best wines across a range of price points. “From entry level wines all the way up to super premium, Margaret River icon-status wines. We probably focus on rosé as much as anyone does in the west, plus all the classic varieties that Margaret River does well – chardonnay, aromatic sauvignon blanc blends. We’re very proud of all the wines we produce but it’s probably our top cabernets that we’re the most proud of.”
Tasting Team member Erin Larkin says Deep
Woods has been nudging the Best Value award for a number of years: “The team has shown a thrilling (some may say flagrant) disregard for accepted price-point quality; ie, their entry-level wines present compelling drinking propositions, and their Reserve range (among the cheapest of the best in Margaret River) frequently blitz the competition in the quality:value stakes.”
Deep Woods, owned by the Fogarty Wine Group, is able to produce great wines at good prices thanks to Fogarty’s scale. “We’re all on a common journey to make Australia’s best wine and most consistent wines,” says Julian. Margaret River is the most amazing region to grow grapes in, and the team are lucky to be surrounded by such great resources, he adds. “That’s when you really start succeeding and achieving as a team and making, hopefully, Australia’s best value wines. I’d like to think that Australia’s best wine can be the best value wines, too, and then we’re really delivering for everybody.” J’aime Cardillo
