It takes an incredible hotel to be worthy of the white-sand beaches and turquoise waters of Boracay – and Shangri-La’s Boracay Resort & Spa is one of those rare gems that fits the bill. On arrival at the resort’s exclusive welcome lounge in Caticlan, guests are greeted and escorted by a host to Shangri-La’s speedboat. In less than 30 minutes, after cruising along the gorgeous coastline, you reach the shores of the first and only deluxe resort on the island. Take a deep breath; your stay at this Philippines oasis has only just begun.

Located in a sheltered cove alongside two private beaches, the 219 rooms and villas are decorated with traditional touches, from the woven abaca rugs to the accent lighting created with local capiz shells. For an especially memorable stay, book the Premier Family Seaview Room.

Kiddie heaven

The resort is, quite simply, a kids’ paradise. From an ice- cream and candy station at breakfast to golf buggy rides to go fish feeding at onsite ponds, this resort manages to make families a priority while still maintaining the brand’s trademark elegance. Don’t be surprised if the kids want to spend all their time at the Adventure Zone, running between the two huge slides and play area.

Let’s not forget the aquatic activities: the main swimming pool is set amid lush gardens and water fountains. The resort also boasts two beaches, one of which is private and available only to its guests. While the kids dart between the playground, pool and beach, parents can sit back and relax on a hammock or in a cabana. Parasailing, kayaking and sea diving are also available for the more adventurous. The four restaurants and two bars enjoy panoramic views of the azure Sibuyan Sea or the resort’s grounds. At dusk, gather around the fire pit or lounge in a cabana at Solana Bar to enjoy the sunset, sipping on cocktails and munching on the tapas-inspired menu. Be sure to catch the cultural show at the Alon Bar, a nightly fire dance display on the beach. Rima Restaurant is a guest favourite, set among the treetops overlooking the resort and the cliff-top Sirena, the signature seafood restaurant.

When some alone time is needed to take in the romantic atmosphere – whether it’s to enjoy some fine dining, dive into the adults- only pool or indulging in a treatment at the CHI, The Spa – there is a babysitting service available.
