Eight simple steps to raise responsible travellers
1. Start local
Raise your children to give thoughtfully in their own environment.
2. Do your research
Sit down with your kids to research the religion, culture and language of your destination, paying special attention to local traditions, etiquette and customs.
3. Be respectful
Never take or share pictures of people if it does not respect their rights and privacy, especially with regards to children who are unable to give informed consent.
4. Be supportive
Always try to use local shops and services, or those tourism providers giving back to the community.
5. Be thoughtful
Do not visit local attractions where animals are exploited.
6. Say no to beggars
It is best not to give gifts or money to beggars or children as this can be potentially harmful and facilitates the continuing cycle of poverty.
7. Give a little
After returning home think how you can support or donate to reputable organisations that will use the money on projects that will help break the cycle of poverty.
8. Take the leap
Work out what and how you and your kids can give back on, or after, your journey – and then commit to it.
