Take them out

Get your littlies away from screens and into the great outdoors on an action-packed getaway in Sabah, Malaysia.

-

On the northern tip of Borneo, the world’s third-largest island, lies Sabah. Famed for fabulous beaches, lush rainforest and abundant wildlife, this is the ultimate destination for adventurous families, inviting you to discover everything from the soaring peaks of its ancient mountains to vibrant coral reefs under the sea.

Small it may be, but don’t be deceived: Sabah is packed with treasures waiting to be discovered. More than half of the region is forest, and a trek through its jungles reveals that they are home to wildlife including pythons, gibbons, clouded leopards and more. For little lovers of animals such as these, visits to the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre and the Borneo Sun Bear Conservation Centre are must-dos.

Conveniently, English is widely spoken, but if you’re looking for a more immersive cultural experience, a visit to Mari Mari Cultural Village will bring you face-to-face with

Murut head-hunting warriors and a chance to practise your blowpipe skills. Then, make a visit to the colonial era on a nostalgic ride with North Borneo Railway across paddy fields and village homes on stilts. Discover the region’s natural beauty from above on the Coral Flyer, the longest island-to-island zipline in the world, swooshing little thrillseekers 250 metres from Gaya to Sapi.

When you’re ready to hit the ground, make time for Kota Kinabalu, where waterfront markets bustling with fishermen cosy up sideby-side with family-friendly resorts aplenty. Less than an hour from the hustle and bustle, Shangri-la’s Rasa Ria Resort & Spa’s new nature reserve offers local cultural experiences and an educational Discovery Centre. Whichever adventure you choose, rest assured little ones won’t be wishing they were on the couch this holiday.
