Take a cornucopia of green fields, sheltered rainforests and dramatic sea cliffs rimmed by tranquil white-sand beaches and brilliant blue waters. Add air that is some of the freshest and cleanest in the world and a bounty of unique wildlife. Mix in a generous dash of history, and you have the recipe for the jaw-droppingly beautiful Tasman Peninsula.

The World Heritage-listed Port Arthur Historic Site is a faded beauty with a sombre history (along with its convict past, it was the site of the Port Arthur massacre in 1996), but kids will enjoy exploring every nook and historic cranny of its remaining buildings and learning about its convict past with free fun and games at the Education Centre.

Tasmania may not be the first place to spring to mind for a beach holiday, but the Tasman Peninsula’s dramatic coastlines are dotted with some of Australia’s most beautiful beaches. Our favourite is Safety Cove, with its sheltered beach offering gentle waters as well as hilariously squeaky white sand and plenty of rock pools to explore.

The Tessellated Pavement at Eaglehawk Neck was created by a rare natural erosion occurrence hundreds of thousands of years ago. The resulting landform is extraordinary, with thousands of rock squares stacked like Stone Age Lego, with hundreds of rock pools where our kids discovered a wealth of weird and wonderful sea creatures.
