LIGHTING HAS MOVED BEYOND MERE FUNCTION INTO FABULOUS FORM; THESE THREE LOCAL PRODUCERS ARE PUSHING THE DESIGN ENVELOPE

-

1 SATELIGHT

Melbourne design studio Satelight has always shown a fun edge to their lighting solutions, but their new ranges take on a sense of whimsical elegance. With inspiration drawn from jewellery, the ‘String Theory’ wall light (above) resembles a brooch, the ‘Entwine’ pendant light (above right) calls to mind a delicately draped string of pearls, and the ‘Symbol’ pendant (right) looks like a super-chic earring. Visit satelight.com.au.

2 RAKUMBA

MELBOURNE-BASED LIGHTING BRAND RAKUMBA’S NEW ‘TYPOGRAPHY’ RANGE (PICTURED TOP, ABOVE LEFT AND ABOVE RIGHT) IS A COLLABORATION WITH THE NETHERLANDS-BASED AUSTRALIAN DESIGN DUO, STUDIO TRULY TRULY, AND IS A CLEVER COLLECTION OF FIXTURES THAT FORM ENDLESS EXPRESSIONS IN LIGHTING FORMATIONS. THE TEAM SCORED A PRIZE FOR ‘BEST INTERNATIONAL PRODUCT’ AT THE FAIR; VISIT RAKUMBA.COM.AU FOR MORE DETAILS.

3 VOLKER HAUG

If drama is what you’re after, then Volker Haug’s ‘Oddments’ pendant light is your piece. Sitting beneath this bad boy would have you thinking the solar system is spinning above your head. The arcs are made of brass, and each light is formed from hand-blown glass. With an assortment of possible configurations, you could create something quite out of this world. From $2255 for the 1100mm arc; visit volkerhaug.com for more details.
