We come across more than a few pretty boudoirs – but there’s something that’s particularly special about uncovering a handsome sleep zone. “I love the layered effect created by navy tones in the walls, window dressings and bedlinen,” explains HB digital content editor Diana. beauty secrets:

It’s both the colour and character that make this worthy of a spot in a Ralph Lauren catalogue. The daring navy wall paint – Senate by Dulux – creates a major impact and is tempered by touches of tan, along with personal treasures. A custom upholstered bedhead by

Lisa Burdus completes the scheme.

This delightful dining space scored votes for its rich tones, its vintage vibes and an unapologetically refined aesthetic. “There’s a grown-up elegance to this room,” says HB acting editor Katrina. The jewel in the crown, she continues, is “that blue. It just brings the space into now.” beauty secrets:

As part of a Sydney home built in 1905, this zone honours its past with a vintage timber dining table surrounded by freshly reupholstered chairs. The exquisite antique cabinet provides something blue, while a graceful Hamptons pendant light from

Magins Lighting adds a little new.

This is a contemporary take on the classic white kitchen, and we couldn’t be more on board. “There’s so much to love here,” says HB acting editor Katrina. “The chevron splashback is fantastic, I like the practicality of the high-back bar stools and the big island bench would work a treat for entertaining or just in daily life.” beauty secrets:

It’s the fabulous finishes and punches of matt black that bring this kitchen to life. “I wanted it to be luxe, open and bright – but also functional and family-friendly,” says homeowner and finalist Kate, who shares her NSW home with husband Eddy and four-year-old son Ollie. She gave the plain space a facelift using ‘Herringbone Calacutta Honed Mosaic’ splashback tiles from Beaumont Tiles, an Essastone benchtop and Laminex cabinetry in Parchment – plus those head-turning black fittings: an Abey ‘Schock Magma’ sink, mixer from Meir and handles sourced on Ebay. The airy glass Beacon Lighting pendant lights are a superb finishing touch.

Dark and moody palette? Tick. Luxurious tub? Tick. Statement surfaces? Tick. This high-style space by interior designer Maja Thylander has all the makings of a five-star bathroom. And it’s awash with clever contrasts, too – we love the way the curves of the bath are beautifully offset by graphic concrete floor tiles. beauty secrets:

What elevates this room – quite literally – are the dramatic design details. A splitlevel floor puts the attractive tub on a pedestal – try Apaiser’s ‘Oman’ bath for an equally shapely number – making bathtime a grand affair, while a wall of frosted windows stirs up just the right amount of mystery.

45 finalist we love:

The HB team would happily spend an afternoon lounging in this sunny outdoor room. “It really nails the Aussie dream of indoor/outdoor living,” says Temple & Webster’s head of styling Jessica. Notably, the area originally was a secondary car space sitting off the home’s garage, and has been completely transformed into this stylish living zone. beauty secrets:

Originally from the UK, homeowner Fiona – winner of $500 to spend at Temple & Webster – was keen to embrace the Australian climate in her own alfresco space, decked out with an Ikea sofa and abundant ferns from Flower Power. The timber panelled wall in Dulux Colorbond Woodland Grey is a cool, contemporary colour choice, but the real crowning glory is the large painted mirror. “It adds depth and

I love the way it reflects different parts of the garden,” comments Fiona. >

wow, wow!” exclaims HB picture editor Helen. “To come home to a space like this every day would be amazing.” She would leave her keys on the sleek console table, stop to admire the fanciful feature wall and then throw open those black French doors to the home’s lovely living quarters. beauty secrets:

The entryway created by interior designer Svetlana Tryaskina is undeniably grandiose, but it’s also surprisingly quite petite. The Fornasetti II ‘Nuvolette’ wallpaper visually expands the space, while the black ceiling and Art Deco pendant draw the eye upwards. Then there’s the uber-opulent flooring, crafted from three different kinds of marble, if you will.

Ever showered while looking out at the stars? Well, we can dream. “A black steel-framed window is the design masterstroke in this shower built for two – with the gold tapware coming in a close second,” says HB acting editor Katrina. As for third: the moody colour palette. beauty secrets:

Designer Melanie Turner gives new meaning to the term shower cubicle, turning this one into a sanctuary in its own right. Glossy grey tiles – both largescale and small-format – provide an earthy base and tie in with a glorious green outlook. Graceful gold tapware (see The English Tapware Company for similar) seals the very glamorous deal.

“Colour, pattern and playfulness – what more could you ask for?” wonders HB’s associate editor, Gavin. Whimsy and fun fit out this six-year-old boy’s room, a rhapsody in blue. The main attraction is a canopy so enchanting we’re tempted to re-create it in our own grown-up sleep spaces. beauty secrets:

This is a room made for dreaming – and playing and reading, too. Visual interest comes via the Nobilis ‘Ithaque’ wallpaper, printed with ships and nautical themes, while a basket of books at the end of the bed makes storytime a breeze. As for that golden canopy? Steal the style with

Jack & Willow’s ‘Numero 74 Circus Canopy’ organic cotton tent.

49 finalist we love:

‘‘Special’ is the word Temple & Webster’s head of styling, Jessica, used to describe this space. “I imagine being in here would feel fresh and airy; it would be a joy to do your laundry!” she says. From the subtle statement splashback to the herringbone floor tiles and farmhouse sink, every feature in the space exudes an easy elegance – and instantly impressed our 50 Beautiful Rooms judges. beauty secrets:

“The Hamptons was my biggest inspiration,” explains homeowner Jo, who shares her Perth home with partner Duncan and aunty Silvana. Indeed, her mix of materials speaks of American East Coast style: mosaic marble tiles from Zuccari dress the floor and splashback, and Statuario Venato Smartstone tops the bench. But this laundry’s appeal extends beyond the surface, with a huge sink from The Sink Warehouse – plus a washing machine and dryer by Fisher & Paykel – ensuring the room is highly practical, too.

50 we love:

And that’s a wrap on Home Beautiful’s 50 Beautiful Rooms for another year – and what a space to finish on! “Reminiscent of a Moroccan hammam, this bathroom transports you to faraway lands,” says HB features editor Christina, citing the sumptuous hues, intricate architectural details and exotic furniture. beauty secrets:

A freestanding ‘Ryese’ composite stone bath from Pietra Bianca takes the spotlight underneath a twinkling antique chandelier. But it’s the teal paint which really makes this space magical (capture the textured look by using Porter’s Paints French Wash in Cuban Turquoise). Paired with a vintage Indian archway from Indigo Love, it conjures up the romance of a riad.

“THERE ARE SO MANY BIG design statements HERE, FROM THE TEAL WALLS TO THE AMAZING BATH – BUT IT ALL COMES TOGETHER TO SAY ‘BEAUTIFUL ROOM’ ” ~ WENDY MOORE, HB EDITOR-IN-CHIEF
