ENSEMBLE ENVY
OUR TOP PICKS FOR A STREAMLINED LOOK
to Ensemble or not?
You’re presented with two main options when choosing a new sleeping spot. You can select a mattress that sits on top of an upholstered ensemble base or opt to place your selected mattress on a bed frame. Whichever arrangement you choose is predominantly a matter of style. Ensembles offer a compact minimalist look and can be teamed with a valance and a custom wallmounted headboard to form a centrepiece. Placing your mattress in a bed frame offers you plenty of scope to stamp your own personal style, with myriad finishes, profiles and design options – just be mindful that a mattress can feel very different on a slat frame compared to an ensemble base, advises Forty Winks head of marketing Alex D’Amico. “We always recommend you first try the combination you plan to use at home, to ensure it meets your needs,” says Alex.
The ultimate test
When buying a bed for two, shop with your partner so that you can choose a mattress you both find comfortable. Don’t rush the process, advises Harvey Norman bedding national product and marketing manager Amanda Balech. “Ideally, spend at least 10 minutes or so on a selection of mattress types and make sure you lie flat so your body is fully supported,” she says. “The right mattress will gently support your entire body and assist in keeping your spine in a neutral position, no matter your preferred sleeping position.” Also, try rolling over, sitting up and getting in and out of bed, as ease of movement will contribute to long-term comfort.
