MATTRESS MAGIC
OUR MOST POPULAR, COMFY CHOICES FOR A SOUND SLEEP
Price point
The adage ‘you get what you pay for’ applies to mattresses, says Bedshed national merchandise manager Les Sevel. Different materials and levels of technology influence price, with basic queen mattresses starting from $299 through to more than $5000 (the latter will have new-age materials including combinations of gel-infused visco foams and latex, double-layer pocket springs, and wool and silk blended into the cover. “We recommend you pay as much as you can afford, as buying a quality mattress is an investment in your well-being,” says Les.
Sleep preferences
Your body size and preferred sleeping position can help determine which mattress feel you may favour, says Bedgear sleep scientist and chief innovation officer Dr Lorenzo Turicchia. “Firmer mattresses are usually ideal for back or stomach sleepers, as they provide support and pressure,” says Lorenzo. For side sleepers, a medium-feel, ‘zoned’ mattress that supports your hips and allows shoulders to gently sink into the mattress is a good option. If you move around a lot in bed or suffer from painful joints, a softer or plush mattress is suitable.
Mattress material guide
How your mattress is manufactured is key to a good night’s sleep. Here are your options. Innerspring enables heat to move away from the body and promotes airflow, says Sealy national marketing manager Wade Ganzer. Pocket coil features individually wrapped pocket springs that distribute body weight evenly and minimise partner disturbance. Memory foam adapts to your body, providing pressure relief and support, says Bedshed’s Les. Natural latex foam is durable, breathable, moulds to body shape and is resilient against bed bugs and mites – great for allergy sufferers. Hybrid models offer a combination of springs and thick layers of memory foam.
