1 Find the per­fect idea

The process of de­ter­min­ing what the cover im­age could be is a work­shop in it­self. For me, mul­ti­ple ideas are ex­plored and re­fined. The jacket of a book is the pri­mary vis­ual tool for sales, so there can be much feed­back from the pub­lisher on what it feels will work best in sell­ing the book. I lean to­wards iconic im­agery with a clean sil­hou­ette, so that it can read eas­ily both from a crowded shelf in a book­store, or as a small im­age for an on­line re­tailer’s web­site.
