Jan Ditlev Christensen talks us through this personal piece, which mixes sci-fi with fantasy.

My objective was to create an image that shows our hero arriving at the city of Alkon. The piece is cartoonish and filled with atmosphere, and it’s important to capture that moment when he arrives at the port and sees the docking ships. We should feel his promise of future adventures, and a longing for distant worlds.

Finishing touches This is just more refinement, making sure the silhouette of the main character reads well, as well as giving the whole image the final details such as more atmospheric perspective and a stronger waterfall.

Sketching it out This is the initial sketch, focusing on the composition. I use perspective lines as a guide, as well as making sure the viewer’s gaze moves from the central ship, to the hero, up the waterfall, to the ship in the sky and back again.

Establishing values Here I’m refining the composition and I make a clear value drawing. This makes it easier to put down the first colour pass. In addition, the sketch clearly defines the shapes of the different elements.

Building blocks Now the fun starts, giving the image the right lighting, colour and mood. I block out with a Soft brush on a layer set to Overlay. Then the colours are applied to the values on top of the images.
