2 The underpainting stage

The underpainting process is a complicated task. It may look easy when you watch it being done, but it relies on the intuition of the artist to pick out a few colours from the palette. The skin colour from the underpainting doesn’t have to look exactly like the finished piece – I can tweak it later. I use dark values to block in the shadows.
