1 The initial thumbnails

Usually when I begin a new piece, I have a clear image in my head that I’ll attempt to get onto paper. I start by creating a small collection of thumbnails in a Rhodia dot grid sketchbook with a ballpoint pen. Using a dot grid sketchbook for this enables you to not only keep your thumbnails tidier, but also to plan for the aspect ratio you’ll be using with far more precision.
