They say change is as good as a holiday, so giving your favourite room or your whole home a travel-themed makeover could be the next best thing – like these interiors covering a cross-section of well-loved travel and holiday destinations. And if you’re anything like the Inside Out team, you would’ve subconsciously taken style notes during your travels, whether you visited a modern metropolis or an island escape – think Palm Springs sorbets...

For stylist Vanessa Colyer Tay, travelling and styling are two halves of one whole. Travel destinations frequently inform her work as an interior stylist. “Like planning a holiday, the styling process includes lateral thinking, problem solving and concept building,” she says. “Travel inspires my mind and sparks curiosity that just delights my creative process.”

But be warned readers: there are some solid pitfalls to trying to re-create a holiday vibe at home, from oversized Eiffffel Towers to not-evenremotely-cool-kitsch hibiscus patterns. Here are Vanessa’s tips to celebrate your wanderlust instincts at home without the cheap souvenirs.

CHANNEL THE VIBE

The secret to styling your place after being inspired by your favourite travel destinations is to avoid the hackneyed, literal approach.

Daydreaming of New York? Turn to pieces that echo the brash, self-confident nature of a city that never sleeps over a Statue of Liberty motif. It’s the textures and surfaces that will give it edge without being obvious. Evoke the coquettish flair of Parisian nightlife and sensuality via a neon light of silhouetted legs performing the cancan and luxe velvet textures reminiscent of the Moulin Rouge – hit pause on the Eiffffel Tower paraphernalia.

Most importantly, ask yourself what mood and energy you’re trying to achieve in the space: that should guide you.

FIND A HERO PIECE

“Choose one strong element that represents a clear look, feel and concept, and let that be your storyteller,” says Vanessa. This feature could be an artwork, a wall or floor finish or a furniture item.

“Once your concept is in place, complement the main element with secondary pieces,” says Vanessa. To avoid the kitschy souvenir factor, “be guided by the destination’s atmosphere or vibe, as opposed to its literal landmarks.”

START OFF SMALL

For those eager to incorporate their travels into their place but who aren’t quite ready for a whole room refresh, Vanessa’s advice is to keep it simple – avoid anything too conceptual, and focus on singular pieces comprising of keepsakes from your travels over styling an entire space. “Declutter and show offff pieces that inspire you,” she says. “These could be large focal pieces, or smaller objects and mementos like tickets and postcards, displayed as a collection in a styled vignette.”
