Do you feel you ought to be in control of most things? Then put your organisation skills to the test and try managing a whole virtual city? In Lincity-ng you’re committed to building, developing and maintaining a city and your end goal is to achieve a sustainable economy. The game is an improved and polished version of the older Lincity, which in turn is a clone of the famous classic SimCity. In the latest game you can build a city from scratch or start with a scenario where there is already a city with some issue or other, such as a lack of food, depopulation, insufficient power supply and so on. Your job is to fix it and manage the budgets, because city funds can be easily frittered away.

The graphics will make SimCity veterans smile; the panels, menu and control buttons look very child-like and reminds us of Tuxpaint. In the game itself, there’s been improvements to texture quality and visual effects. Trees, highways, plants, power lines, cars and other objects have been carefully redrawn and now look more realistic. However, the game is playable on basic graphic cards, and integrated Intel HD chips, but as your city grows Lincity-ng may start lagging a bit, because it has to render more and more textures. Of course, Lincity-ng still needs your imagination. For instance, road traffic is not shown as a live movement, but displayed in a special chart. Aside from graphical fancies, Lincity-ng is a very good attempt at recreating the mechanics and gameplay of the original SimCity game.

The easiest install method for Lincity-ng is to compile it from source, as there are very few pre-built packages for the latest release other than for Ubuntu 15.10.

“A very good attempt to recreate the gameplay of the original SimCity.”
