OpenVPN to ClosedVPN

I set up a Virtual Private Network (VPN) connection when I was using Ubuntu 14.04 LTS and when I did a clean installation of 14.10, and later 15.04, I was able to recreate the VPN connection. I recently did a clean installation of 15.10 and recreated the VPN connection using the same parameters as before. This time, however, it will not run and gives the error message:’…failed because the connection attempt timed out’. How can I find out why the connection attempt is timing out? Is there a way of tracking what happens The first step is to carefully check the details you set up. More often than not this type of problem is caused by a minor error that you don’t notice despite repeated views of the settings. The way to avoid this in future is to export your connection before upgrading, save it to a removable drive and then import it into your new system (or do an upgrade installation instead of a wipe and reinstall each time).

As far as seeing what is happening, the really useful information is on the server. If you have access to that you can look at the logs to see why the connection is being rejected. It’s normal not to give a reason when rejecting a client connection – you don’t want to give clues to someone that is trying to break into you network. If you don’t have access, you may be able to ask someone who does, eg the sysadmin if you are trying to connect to a network at work. The problem is unlikely to be something as simple as an incorrect password or certificate, that would fail immediately, rather than time out, so it could be something else at your end, such as failing to unlock the certificate with your passphrase. Any local problems should appear in the system logs. Ubuntu 15.10 uses Systemd so all of this will be in the journal. You can view relevant entries in the journal in real time by running this command: $ journalctl --lines=0 --follow /usr/sbin/ NetworkManager

Then try to set up and establish the connection. All new messages from Network Manager will appear in the terminal, hopefully
