Configurable parameters
More bang for the buck.
While these backup tools are designed to back up and restore files, some supplement that core functionality with a few extra features to enhance the user experience. ArecaBackup, GadminRsync and LuckyBackup all enable you to simulate the backup process, which gives you a chance to review the changes to the files in the storage location before actually running the backup process.
ArecaBackup treats all processes as transactions that can be restarted. The tool also has a history function that records all user actions. Additionally, you can ask ArecaBackup to generate reports of backup operations and email these to defined accounts. When you are running the backup, the tool enables you to select whether the backup should be verified on completion and whether to add information about the backed up files.
BackInTime allows you to disable taking snapshots if the computer is running on battery. By default the tool checks for changes and doesn’t take a snapshot if nothing has changed. You can override this behaviour, and BackInTime also allows you to preserve the ACL and other attributes of the backed up files.
The default backup option in LuckyBackup performs a full backup and copies the contents of the source directory under the destination directory. In addition to this, it has a Synchronise option which ensures that the contents of the source and the destination directories are the same. A similar option exists in Gadmin-Rsync which can be asked to delete destination files that don’t exist in the backup source. DéjàDup doesn’t offer much in terms of extra features. The tool allows you to specify that you want backups to be kept for a period of time, eg, like a month before deleting them.
