Install I2P
1 Download and launch Installer
Head to https://geti2p.net/en/download#unix and click the i2pinstall_0.9.28.jar button to download the I2P Java installer. Save the file to your /Downloads folder then open the Terminal and run
java -jar i2pinstall_0.9.28.jar to launch the installer. You may need to change the filename and you’ll need Java.
2 Setup I2P
Select your language of choice, then click ‘Next’. Read through the details of I2P being in the public domain and click ‘Next’ again. You will now be asked to specify an installation path for I2P. By default this is ~/i2p. Once installation is complete the installer will list two commands that can be used to launch the I2P router itself.
3 Launch I2P router
Open the terminal and use cd to navigate to the directory where I2P is installed e.g cd / home/alice/i2p . Next run the script to launch the I2P router with ./runplain.sh . You will see a message indicating I2P has started. The I2P router console will open in your default browser. Give I2P a few moments to establish connections.
4 Download a browser
This step is optional but recommended. Although you can technically configure your usual web browser to be able to navigate to .i2p (eepsites) this isn’t very secure. Consider downloading a separate browser at this stage to work specifically with I2P. For extra security consider accessing eepsites using the Torbrowser.
5 Configure the proxy
I2P acts as a local proxy for web browsers to allow them to access eepsites. Specific steps for individual applications are available on I2P’s website https://geti2p.net/en/about/browser-config. If you are using the Tor browser bundle, configuration is done automatically through the FoxyProxy add on so you can ignore this step.
6 Test your I2P browser
Restart your web browser and try to navigate to http://i2p-projekt. i2p/faq. If you are successful, not only will you know you can access eepsites but you can read through some common questions about I2P. Before you begin browsing, navigate to ‘Why is I2P so slow’ for instructions on increasing your bandwidth.
