Gnome Recipes

Sometimes we come across productivity applications that are focused on getting you to write down your usual offline household routines, such as shopping lists or personal budget notes, and for many users it probably feels like putting extra effort into something that doesn’t need transferring into digital form. Writing down cooking recipes is a similar activity and before we discovered the brand new GnomeRecipes, we only knew Gourmet and KRecipes, which are both essentially note-taking applications with a cooking theme.
GnomeRecipes is a fresh approach to managing recipes, simply because it doesn’t just throw a blank editor window at the user, but actually offers real-world recipes right out of the box.
The first time you launch the software, you see a suspiciously familiar layout. It looks like a fork of Gnome SoftwareCenter, with its Today’s Highlighted Items and Editor picks, but GnomeRecipes comes with a set of community made recipes. There aren’t too many recipes yet, but the number is constantly growing.
Each recipe has an eye-catching photo of the serving suggestion, the list of required ingredients and cooking directions. You can find out the preparation and cooking times at the upper part of the window and adjust the number of servings and GnomeRecipes will automatically update the ingredient quantities in the list below.
The cornerstone of GnomeRecipes is the ‘New Recipe’ button in the first part of the header bar. Developers encourage you to share personal knowledge for cooking delicious meals, so that people from around the world can populate the application recipes database with tasty dishes from different cultures. User-supplied recipes are processed and moderated via the application’s bugzilla. Funnily enough, if someone contributes an inedible entry, they will soon get a nonresolvable bug in return. So to keep GnomeRecipe’s open source software free from bugs, you’ll need to submit edible recipes!
“Adjust the number of servings and it will automatically update the ingredient quantities.”
