Mint 18.1 MATE

This is the 32-bit version of Linux Mint with the less demanding MATE desktop. It may be less demanding but it is no less functional and provides a similar experience to the classic Ubuntu/GNOME 2 desktop. That is not to say that this is a distro only for old hardware; MATE works very well on modern systems, and is extremely fast on them thanks to its light weight design. MATE is a good choice for those that want their computer hardware to do computing rather than fancy desktop effects, while avoiding the slightly older and cut down feel of the likes of LXDE.
