How often do you inspect your ~/Downloads directory for old, obsolete, duplicate or other useless downloads? Many Linux users don’t get around to sorting out these files and keep on collecting everything they download, until their $HOME partition becomes menacingly full. It’s fine for you perfectionists who keep everything in ideal order, but this Hotpick is for the rest. We’ve discovered a Python script that classifies your files into categories according to file types. Classifier may be a simple and minimal tool of a few kilobytes, but it does a vital joj. Navigate to the place that feels like a bookcase with broken shelves, and then launch the tool without any arguments $ classifier .

The command will complete immediately (because moving files within the same partition in Linux takes no time) and you’ll notice that your directory now contains far fewer files (if any) but instead has now many extra subdirectories. We used our test ~/Downloads directory as a classic example and admitted that Classifier applied very smart and adequate sorting. For instance, it detected RPM and DEB packages as separate categories, grouped all archives in one subdirectory and also sorted pictures, documents, music, and even .EXE files. There is no undo feature so you may want to copy your source directory and run Classifier against it to imitate a dry run. No data can will be deleted anyway but you may need extra time to find your files after Classifier tidies things up. Installing the tool is extremely simple because Classifier is included in the online Python modules repository, so it goes just like this: $ sudo pip install classifier

Expectably, it is possible to specify input and output directories explicitly and define certain file types by hand - see the $ classifier --help output for full details.

“Classifier applied very smart and adequate sorting.”
