In brief...

Skype released an Alpha version of the program for Linux last year and then a Beta 5.0 version in March 2017. Currently, the program is in version 5.1.0.1 although it’s really just a glorified frontend for the Skype web application. New features include calling regular telephones as well as video calling other Skype platforms.
