Stunt Rally

We only occasionally review heavyweight Linux games in Hotpicks, partly because there aren’t many open source titles that can squeeze all the resources into your machine, and it contrasts with what we see in the world of commercial Linux gaming.

This is why we could not hide our delight at the sight of StuntRally, the ultimate cross-platform racing simulator that is completely open source. It will definitely require a decent GPU, at least a modern Intel GPU to play with average quality settings, and a dedicated video card to enjoy a high-detailed graphics with reflections and reasonable FPS.

After the first launch, StuntRally shows a very useful welcome screen, which explains basic keyboard bindings and suggests that you start training in the tutorial mode and try to complete four basic tracks at first. This is a reasonable variant for getting used to the game’s physics, as well as for exploring a typical StuntRally terrain, which is full of stones and trees, and offers mostly gravel roads.

You can use the Q and W keys to twist your car left and right and rewind your tricks for repeat using the backspace key. The game sports 172 tracks in 34 types of scenery, and also has many advanced features found in professional-grade games, such as championships, replays, racing ghosts, challenges made of the most difficult tracks, a multiplayer mode and more.

If you have a powerful GPU, you can enable split-screen and race a friend on the same computer. Plus, StuntRally lets you redefine input settings, change camera behaviour and design your own tracks.

If you’ve got good equipment and external game controllers, StuntRally will prove to be a second-to-none open source racing game for Linux.
