Agent008Balls is a top-view emulator of the classic American eightball, only it’s a single player game. The game’s blurb reveals that the International Billiards Tournament had been infiltrated by terrorists. You then have to play against the timer, which gives you two minutes to sink as many balls as you can. The game features very attractive graphics with soft and mild colours, a nicely drawn six-pocket table with lots of pixel-crafted details. The gameplay is unusual, yet fun and captivating.
Because you’re not playing against anyone, there are no conventional pocket billiard rules to follow and you can easily sink both striped and solid balls in any sequence. You can even sink the blackball and the cue ball as well (the white ball resets instantly reset after you do this).
Randomly, a ball on the table becomes a ‘bomb’ with a separate countdown. Potting it into any hole gives you extra time, but if you don’t then it explodes. Agent008Balls remembers your score in the web browser cookies, enabling you to reach a maximum 1,500 points by sinking all 15 colour balls.
The game is addictive, and for the most part the balls’ dynamics are very natural, except that the movement sometimes feels a bit swampy, as if rolling friction is slightly greater than necessary. But the great ‘secret agent’ atmosphere with a spy-like music, fonts and other Bond-like details makes up for this. Agent008Balls doesn’t need to be installed locally.
