Driven to print

-

I’ve been having problems with trying to install the correct driver for my Epson XP-760 printer with Ubuntu 17.04. The correct driver should be epsoninkjet-printer-escpr but the system – possibly Cups – is loading “driverless, cups-filters”. At one time the system was working correctly because I have a test print in colour with the proper driver shown on the printout. The Cups driver only prints in black. I tried a number of different live OSes, but couldn’t get the correct driver loaded. I tried the Openprinting.org script to load the driver, but it doesn’t work. I then tried Debian 8, which is the only system that works perfectly. It loads the correct driver – epson-inkjet-printer-escpr – and prints in colour.

I’ve spent many hours trying to get this to work on Ubuntu, but have now given up. I might start using Debian as my main system. This is the point where I throw my hands up in despair. Bill Shepherd, via email Neil says: Eeek, an all-in-one inkjet! The manual makes no mention of the printer languages the printer supports, so I’d presume the worst – in other words, no easy Postscript support, which would make life easier for Cups. Your next step should be to check with Epson and to be fair to the company it has a bang-up-todate (23 October 2017) driver. And you can search for all Epson Linux drivers here: http://download. ebz.epson.net/dsc/search/01/ search/?OSC=LX. Select the generic driver, download the DEB rather than the RPM or TAR.

You’ll need to run sudo apt-get install lsb before you install the DEB. Then cd ~/Download to the folder, install the package with sudo dpkg -i epson*.deb and sudo apt install -f to ensure the dependencies are fixed. Then you should be able to use the Settings>Printers to add it correctly. Good luck!
