Welcome...

- Archie Roques tells us about his jam and maker achievements down Norwich way.

By day I’m an A-level student, but by night I organise the Norwich Raspberry Jam. I’m a Norwich Hackspace member, and head electron-wrangler at the Wonky Resistor Co.

When I first saw the Pi on the news, I knew it was for me. I got my hands on one, and everything escalated from there! I’ve made quite a few projects over the years: from gesture-controlled mood lighting to game controller kits. This year I hosted two Raspberry Jams in Norwich and co-founded the Young Makers’ Tech Club, a friendly club for kids interested in tech. I also run workshops for beginners and educators, to get them started on their Pi journey.

I’ve been fortunate to work with the Forum Trust, which owns and manages a huge building in the centre of Norwich, and organise many educational activities there. Our first jam was part of their Norwich Gaming Festival, and I recently ran a ‘taste of jam’ activities day at the Norwich Science Festival. It’s also the proud owners of a set of pi-topCEEDs thanks to us!

The Pi community, and the maker community in general, is a fantastic bunch of people. When we started the jam we had people come from afar to help do talks, workshops and activities, and I enjoy going and helping out at other jams. You get a great buzz when you see the lightbulb moment in someone when you teach them a new thing! It’s fantastic to know that if I ever have a problem or need a hand, there’ll be plenty of people who’ve been there before and are happy to help!
