Post-Installation Modifications

-

Once you have a new Wordpress installation, you can choose a template at http://bit.ly/w-p-themes. For this tutorial, the Hestia theme will be used because it’s simple and free. You can add the theme through the Admin, or download the theme, unzip it and copy the folder to the wp-content/themes directory. After the theme is in the wp-content/themes folder, hover over it and activate it. If you look at your site in a browser ( localhost/wordpress-optimise), you’ll see the new theme, although it needs a couple of updates such as a header image.

A default Ubuntu PC and Wordpress may not always work perfectly. For example, before you change the header image and make adjustments, you’ll probably need to create a folder at wp-content/

uploads and give it permissions of 777, and ensure www-data is the owner. The code is shown below.

username:/var/www/html/wordpress-optimise/wp-content$ mkdir uploads username:/var/www/html/wordpress-optimise/wp-content$ chmod 777 uploads username:/var/www/html/wordpress-optimise/wp-content$ chown www-data:www-data uploads

After you have the uploads folder, you can get to work. Keep in mind that you can do most of the detailing at Appearance>Customize for most templates. For example, with the original Twenty Seventeen template, you would change items in Site Identity, Header Media and Homepage Settings. But with Hestia, you would start with Site Identity and move on to Appearance Settings followed by Frontpage Sections >Big Title Selection.
