remember the classic game Lemmings, or its open source successor Pingus? Well, a smoother, funnier and more up-to-date reincarnation of Lemmings is here, this time starring cute little rabbits.

The world of Rabbit Escape fits into a series of square-lined paper sheets, one for each level. The goal is to complete each level by guiding your rabbits from the orange respawn point to the green target. Typically, rabbits cannot reach the destination by themselves as they can only crawl forward or turn around when hitting an obstacle, so that a player has to help.

The game looks simple thanks to pleasant, if quite pale, graphics in a style of a pencil sketch. However, there is a rich set of tools along the left side of the window. Here you can use select various objects and put them on the playing field in order to make rabbits do certain things. These enable digging, bridging, blocking, ‘brollying’ and exploding. As you advance from one level to the next, the difficulty grows, but you always have hints to solve a desperate situation. These hints are subtly suggested rather than giving everything away: you can always skip them and challenge yourself to solve the level without any help, or open just the first hint without looking at the others.

Some of the level themes features ‘rabbots’ – enemy bots. Kill them, or at least don’t let them reach the target before your rabbits do. That’s when we realized what the Explode tool was for!

The game is pure fun and a decent brain-trainer for both kids and adults. Grab the APK package for your Android device, or the JAR file for the desktop. Run the JAR as usual:

$ java -jar rabbit-escape-0.11.jar

Don’t leave your rabbits alone, they really need your help!
