most high-quality tower defence games are commercial, but we’ve discovered an open source version that is no less playable. Though HTML5 Tower Defense doesn’t have the catchiest of names or high-end graphics, it feels like a fully-fledged game that can keep you captivated for quite a long time. On a square playing field of 16 x 16 tiles, bad guys start crawling towards your heartland (the grey tile in the lower-right corner), and you need to shoot them down with turrets that you can place anywhere. Machines (LXF223).
However, HTML5 Tower Defense sports a slightly different set of rules. For instance, the number of lives you have applies per level and restores to the max value once you successfully resist the current wave. This is a wise change that allows for better survival and longer playing time. Another unusual feature that we
like in this small game is the ‘brick’ tool: it’s possible to change the landscape by building walls or standalone obstacles. In theory, you can force invaders to go down your own maze-like path so that you have more time for shooting and a better chance to survive. Just like in other tower defence games, the goal here is to stay alive as long as possible.
The game’s interface is in Chinese, but it takes no time to work out what is where and find the right counters for invaders, your lives and even locate the Pause button. HTML5 Tower Defense definitely has a noticeable and a very Oriental spirit of an arcade game turned into a survival strategy.
