Choosing the right screen recorder for Linux can be a challenge: there is a vast assortment of high-quality applications, some that have feature parity with each other. It often comes down to a matter of taste, GUI appeal and the like. Today’s choice is Vokoscreenng, a nice, feature-rich desktop recorder with a very friendly user interface. This application had been out of sight for a while because the author had temporary halted the development of the original Vokoscreen, and that may be the reason why most people use alternatives these days, like Recordmydesktop, Kazam or OBS.

But, since late 2018 the Vokoscreen developer has been polishing the new version, and by now it seems to be stable and ready for daily use. Unlike the original Vokoscreen that was based on Ffmpeg, the new

Vokoscreenng is Gstreamer-based (and written from scratch) with virtually the same interface. It’s debatable which multimedia backend is better, but Gstreamer is a whole framework and a broader library, which can be extended with plug-ins, and can even incorporate Ffmpeg itself as a plug-in.

Vokoscreenng is robust and very easy to get started. If you simply hit the Start button, it will start recording your screen session without audio using the VP8 encoder and the Matroska container, and will place the result in ~/Videos. An average screencast with these settings usually takes 4-5MB per minute of recording. You can add webcam capture, audio input, and add some nice extras. The video encoding options can be found, somewhat strangely, under the ‘microphone’ tab, and the webcam settings are under the dedicated Camera section in the left-side menu.

Vokoscreenng worked stably and let us set up the usual video podcast modes – with a small webcam window somewhere in the corner of the screen.

?? ?? Many people find the Vokoscreen interface very easy to use, and it provides all needed controls.
