CUTTING OUT

1 For Block A cut:

Q Five (5) 4½in x WOF strips from Fabric A.

Q Ten (10) 4½in x WOF strips from Fabric E.

Q Nine (9) 4½in squares from Fabric F. 2 For Block B cut:

Q Two (2) 8½in x WOF strips from Fabric B. Q Two (2) 8½in x WOF strips from Fabric C. Q Three (3) 8½in x WOF strips from Fabric D. Q Sixteen (16) 5½in x WOF strips from Fabric E. 3 For the binding, cut seven (7) 2½in x WOF strips from Fabric C. 4 Cut the backing fabric in half across the width and sew the pieces together along the long sides. Trim to 67in square.

PIECING BLOCK A

5 There are a total of thirteen (13) of Block A, with two versions – one that is strip pieced with Fabrics A and E and one that is strip pieced with the addition of a Fabric F triangle in the top right corner. To make the basic strip-pieced Block A use the following pieces: Q Two (2) 4½in x WOF strips of Fabric E. Q One (1) 4½in x WOF strip of Fabric A.

6 Sew the strips together with the Fabric A strip between the Fabric E strips. Press seams open or towards the darker fabric. From this strip-pieced unit cut three 12½in blocks ( Fig 1). Repeat this process four more times to create a total of thirteen (13) blocks (two will be spare). Check the blocks all measure 12½in square. Set four (4) of these blocks aside.

7 For the other nine (9) of Block A, add a triangle of Fabric F in one corner, as follows. Place one 4½in square of Fabric F right sides together with the strip-pieced block, aligning the top right corners. Mark a diagonal line from bottom right to top left, as shown in Fig 2. Sew on this line, trim ¼in from your seam and press open.

8 Check the block measures 12½in square. Repeat this process to add a triangle corner to nine (9) of Block A in total.

PIECING BLOCK B

9 There are a total of twelve (12) Block B in the quilt – three (3) with Fabrics B and E, three (3) with Fabrics C and E and six (6) with Fabrics D and E. For the construction of Block B colourway B/E use the following pieces: Q Two (2) 5½in x WOF strips of Fabric E. Q One (1) 8½in x WOF strip of Fabric B.

10 Sew the three strips together with Fabric B between the Fabric E strips. Press the seams open or towards the darker fabric.

11 Cut 12½in squares diagonally from the strip-pieced unit, as shown in Fig 3 – you should get two squares from each unit. A 12½in square quilter’s ruler is a useful tool for this. Repeat this process to make three of Block B colourway B/E in total ( Fig 4).

12 Now repeat this process again to create colourway C/E for Block B, using the 8½in x WOF strips of Fabric C and the 5½in x WOF strips of Fabric E. Make three (3) Block B like this ( Fig 5).

MIX MODERN, GRAPHIC PRINTS WITH BOLD FLORALS AND MORE ORGANIC SHAPES TO GIVE MOVEMENT AND INTEREST!

13 ! Repeat this process again to create colourway D/E for Block B, using the 8½in x WOF strips of Fabric D and the 5½in x WOF strips of Fabric E. This time make six (6) Block B like this ( Fig 6).

ASSEMBLING THE QUILT

14 Lay out the twenty-five blocks in five rows each with five blocks ( Fig 7). Sew each row of blocks together, pressing the seams of rows 1, 3 and 5 in the opposite direction to rows 2 and 4. Now sew the rows together. Press the long seams to one side, or open if you prefer.

QUILTING AND FINISHING

15 Make a quilt sandwich and baste with pins or spray adhesive. Quilt as desired. The quilt shown was machine quilted in simple lines, echoing the shapes made up in the blocks. 16 Trim off excess batting and backing fabric and square up the quilt. Tidy any thread ends. Sew the 2½in binding strips together with 45-degree seams and press the seams open. Fold the binding in half along the length, wrong sides together, and press. Sew this double-fold binding to the quilt and either hand stitch or machine stitch the binding to the back of the quilt, taking care to mitre the corners neatly.
